A Rumbling Whisper

Exhibited as part of Contra Art Fair Johannesburg on the 25th of May 2024 at Transwerke, Constitution Hill and on the 26th of May 2024 at Victoria Yards.

‘A Rumbling Whisper’ unfolds as a manifesto of decolonisation. It explores the process of decolonisation in its material and immaterial forms through themes of land, conflict, identity and spirituality. The latter takes centre stage in the artists' works, calling upon the audience to embark on a journey of self-discovery and cultural reclamation. The 'Rumbling Whisper' – an insinuation of a change yet to come – revisits a past of anti-colonial action heeded by the promise of radical transformation. The exhibition forces us to contemplate what has inhibited this conceived transformation and challenges the complacency which informs our day-to-day lives.

In Wretched of the Earth (1962), Frantz Fanon writes, "When I search for Man in the technique and the style of Europe, I see only a succession of negations of man and an avalanche of murders". 'A Rumbling Whisper' emphasises precisely the importance of piecing together and reconstituting the various histories of our land to reclaim our cultures and grasp the complexities of our identities—the exhibiting artists' work centres around the exploration of W. E. B. Du Bois' notion of double consciousness delves into the inward "twoness" experienced by Black individuals in a society dominated by white norms and values. This notion translates throughout the exhibition in the form of conflict, in its physical manifestations and psychological and metaphysical ones.

In 'A Rumbling Whisper', the artists' narratives speak to the objective of reconstructing a larger historical and cultural framework. It is a tribute to the unsung heroes, the forgotten voices, and the ancestral echoes that guide us towards a future where art becomes a beacon of hope, defiance, and emancipation.
